Artist Statement
In this fast paced world of art and life, I find myself in a constant state of mourning. Grief is a funny little feeling, one that can be carried around for an eternity. Constantly, I am grieving; experiences, objects, memories, people. My mother; who still lives yet I no longer know. My childhood; knowing it to be one way but perceiving it differently as I grow. My relationships; how time and the consequences of it have interfered. My body; discovering I have PCOS and how this diagnosis permanently impacts my future. My artwork is a reflection of the way I feel loss in my life. It is a stage to voice what I find to be the most vulnerable and painful experiences I’ve endured. My practice has recently been evolving, but tends to rely heavily on graphite and oil paint on canvas. I like to be expressive in my craft, whether it be through loose brushstrokes, vivid color palettes, or unfinished messiness. Yet most importantly, I like to experiment; to grow with my art as it changes beneath my fingertips.
Much of my art is deeply rooted in my memories or my representation of memory. My most prominent artist influences are Tracey Emin, Jennifer Packer, and Jordan Casteel. The looseness of Emin and Packer, combined with the “unfinished” quality of Casteel inspires my technique. I’ve recently interpreted this concept of looseness and unfinish into mess; how my memories are messy, so the artwork I’m creating should be a reflection of that as well.
